Quando noi ci lasciammo
In silenzio e in lacrime,
Spezzato a mezzo il cuore
Nel doverci dividere per anni,
La tua guancia divenne fredda e pallida
E più freddo il tuo bacio;
Quell'ora veramente fu presagio
Del dolore di questa.
La rugiada dell'alba
Scese gelida sopra la mia fronte:
Io sentii come il monito
Di ciò che sento ora.
Son spezzati i tuoi voti,
Hai fama di volubile:
Sento dire il tuo nome
E ne divido l'onta.
Chi innanzi a me ti nomina
Suona a morto al mio orecchio;
Un brivido mi scuote:
Perché eri tanto cara?
Essi non sanno che ti ho conosciuta,
Che ti ho conosciuta troppo bene:
A lungo a lungo avrò di te un rimpianto
Troppo profondo a dirsi.
C'incontrammo in segreto: in silenzio
Mi dolgo che il tuo cuore
Possa avermi scordato,
